British Monarchy 2012

In 1776 we declared ourselves independent from England, Great Britain, the United Kingdom- call it what you will. We declared King George III a tyrant and created a U.S. government where no title of nobility could ever be given by a U.S. government. So why is it now, in 2012, that the U.S is so enfatuated with the British Monarchy?

At the Olympics this past summer a great video feature during the opening ceremony showed the fictional hero James Bond escorting Queen Elizabeth II to the stadium where they made a staged parachute drop into attendance. The whole world cheered. Remember Princess Diana? You were too young to see that wedding, but probably- you saw the wedding of her son Prince William to his bride- Kate Middleton. Well now she is pregnant and the tabloids and press are all a twitter about it...because her child would become 3rd in line to the British throne.

Why is it that we democratic Americans are so enfatuated with royalty? Why do we care? Heck- why are Disney movies and so many others filled with princesses and princes so popular?

Ben Franklin warned at the signing of the Constitution that we would be a democracy only as long as the people of America could continue to be active citizens and elect people to Congress who would well administer the government. When that was no longer the case he implied- we'd revert to a monarchy. Are we there already?

What do you think?
